The XLIV Reina Sofía Prize for Musical Composition Expands Its Recognition with Two New Awards and a Total Prize Fund of €175,000
The Call for Entries for the XLIV Reina Sofía Prize for Musical Composition is now open. Organized by the Fundació Ferrer de Música, the Prize annually recognizes excellence and innovation in the creation of orchestral repertoire.
From this edition onwards, the Prize expands its scope by introducing two new awards, reinforcing its commitment to supporting contemporary music creation and recognizing a greater number of composers. In addition to the First Prize, endowed with €100,000, this year’s edition includes a Second Prize of €50,000 and a Third Prize of €25,000, bringing the total prize fund to €175,000.
Established in 1982, the Queen Sofía Prize for Musical Composition has become one of Europe’s most prestigious composition awards and a significant milestone in the careers of composers. Throughout its history, it has honoured works by composers such as Joan Guinjoan, Nuria Núñez, Fabià Santcovsky, Josep Planells, and Luis Tabuenca, winner of the most recent edition.
One Composition Eligible for All Three Awards
The competition is open to all Spanish nationals and legal residents of Spain, with no age limit. Submitted works must be original, unpublished, unperformed, and written for symphony orchestra.
Each composer may submit one composition, which will automatically be considered for the First, Second or Third Prize. Applicants are not required to select a specific award category when submitting their work.
The submission deadline is 15 January 2027. Scores must be submitted in printed format, under a pseudonym, to the headquarters of the Ferrer Music Foundation, together with all the documentation specified in the competition rules.
A Prestigious Premiere and Performance Opportunities
The First Prize-winning composition will receive its world premiere at the Teatro Monumental in Madrid, performed by the RTVE Symphony Orchestra. During the concert, Her Majesty Queen Sofía is expected to personally present the award to the winning composer.
In addition, the winning work will be included in the following year’s Spring Concert Series of the Spanish National Youth Orchestra (JONDE), further enhancing its visibility and performance opportunities.
