A new edition of Òh!pera arrives with the support of the Fundació Ferrer de Música
From 2 to 5 July, Fabra i Coats will host a new edition of Òh!pera, the new creation micro-opera project promoted by the Gran Teatre del Liceu and Disseny Hub with the support of the Fundació Ferrer de Música and the Fundació Conservatori Liceu. The initiative, which is part of the programme of the Festival Grec de Barcelona, once again champions innovation, experimentation and emerging talent to bring opera closer to the languages and sensibilities of the 21st century.
Under the artistic direction of Àlex Ollé, renowned stage director and founding member of La Fura dels Baus, the project is based on the creation of micro-operas that, despite their short duration, preserve the essence of the genre through the fusion of music, dramaturgy and stage direction. The works are developed by emerging creators in collaboration with established professionals, creating a space for learning, experimentation and artistic growth.
The performances will take place in different spaces throughout the Fabra i Coats complex, where small-format venues, unique corners and unconventional settings will be transformed into stages that encourage a closer, immersive and experimental artistic experience.
Òh!pera has established itself as a pioneering project that redefines the traditional concept of opera through innovative and interdisciplinary formats. The initiative gives a voice to new creators, encouraging artistic risk-taking and the exploration of new theatrical and musical languages. In this edition, the works address contemporary issues such as identity, technology, ecology and social conflicts, connecting operatic creation with the concerns of today’s world.
Three new perspectives on the contemporary world
This year’s programme includes three micro-operas that explore current issues through diverse and innovative artistic languages.
Jo, núvol
With music by Sergi Puig Serna and a libretto by Alicia Kopf, this production combines audiovisual language and contemporary creation to reflect on human relationships in the age of artificial intelligence. Set in the near future, the story follows a woman who decides to digitise her consciousness in order to edit her memories and erase the traces of a relationship marked by heartbreak and ghosting. A poetic exploration of memory, technology and identity.
La vida por los cuernos
The opera-flamenco work created by composer Anna Colom and librettist Pablo Macho Otero revisits the myth of Theseus, Phaedra and Hippolytus from a contemporary, critical and humour-filled perspective. Through the fusion of opera and flamenco, the piece questions traditional models of masculinity, power and desire, proposing new ways of understanding relationships and identity in today’s world.
Opereta
With music by Arnau Brichs and a libretto by Pol Guasch, this urban musical fantasy places the audience in a space suspended between life and death. Following an accident at a neighbourhood civic centre, the protagonist embarks on a dreamlike journey that blends reality, memories and imagination, in a production that combines sensitivity, irony and reflection on the decisions that shape our lives.
Through its support for Òh!pera, the Fundació Ferrer de Música reaffirms its commitment to promoting young talent, contemporary creation and the development of new formats that contribute to making music and the performing arts tools for cultural and social transformation.
