Perhaps you have been working on it for months —or even years. Perhaps you are still searching for your own voice. Perhaps this is the first time you are submitting a composition to a major prize.
If you have an original, unpublished and unperformed work written for symphony orchestra, now is the time to take it further.
The call for applications for the XLIV Reina Sofía Prize for Musical Composition is now open, and this year brings major new developments. Europe’s most prestigious composition prize is expanding its recognition with two new awards and a total prize fund of €175,000, supporting and recognising a greater number of composers.
Beyond the financial award, the prize is an opportunity for a work to move beyond the page and reach wider audiences.
Could your work be next?
Since 1982, the Reina Sofía Prize for Musical Composition has recognised creators who have contributed to shaping the present and future of contemporary music.
Its past winners include composers such as Joan Guinjoan, Nuria Núñez, Fabià Santcovsky, Josep Planells and Luis Tabuenca, winner of the most recent edition.
Now, the Prize is looking for more works and more voices
There is no age limit. Whether you are just beginning your career or have spent years developing your musical language, you can apply as long as you meet the requirements of the call.
In this edition, the same work may compete for all three awards:
- First Prize — €100,000
- Second Prize — €50,000
- Third Prize — €25,000
You do not need to choose which prize you wish to compete for. Submit a single work, and the jury will determine the award it receives.
From the page to the stage
The work awarded the First Prize will be premiered at the Teatro Monumental in Madrid, performed by the RTVE Symphony Orchestra, in a concert expected to be attended by Her Majesty Queen Sofía, who will personally present the prize to the winning composer.
In addition, the piece will become part of the programme of the Spanish National Youth Orchestra (JONDE) winter season the following year.

Anyone holding Spanish nationality or legally residing in Spain, with no age limit.
What kind of work can I submit?
An original, unpublished and unperformed work written for symphony orchestra.
Can I submit more than one work?
No. The call states that each composer may submit only one work.
Do I have to choose between the First, Second or Third Prize?
No. The same work is eligible for all three awards, and you do not need to select a category when submitting your application.
What if I am young or have not yet established a career?
That is precisely why we encourage you to apply. The Prize has no age limit and does not require a specific professional track record. What matters is the work.
When is the deadline?
You can submit your work until 15 January 2027.
How should I submit my work?
The score must be submitted in printed format and under a pseudonym to the headquarters of the Fundació Ferrer de Música (Diagonal, 549. 5a planta. 08029 Barcelona), together with the documentation specified in the rules.
