We welcome Raquel García Tomás as the new Artistic Director of the Fundació Ferrer de Música
From the Fundació Ferrer de Música, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Raquel García Tomás as Artistic Director. The composer takes over from Jesús Rueda, to whom we express our deepest gratitude for his commitment, dedication, and invaluable contribution to the foundation over 20 years. García Tomás’s first responsibility will be to lead the organisation and serve as a member of the jury of the XLIII Reina Sofía Prize in Music Composition, the decision of which will be announced at the end of February.
Raquel García Tomás (1984) is a composer specialized in interdisciplinary creation and holds a doctorate from the Royal College of Music in London. In 2020, she received the National Music Award, granted by the Spanish Ministry of Culture, and in 2024 she was honored with the National Culture Award from CONCA – Generalitat de Catalunya.
Her music has been performed on stages like the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid, L’Auditori in Barcelona, the Palau de la Música Catalana, Wigmore Hall in London, Queen Elizabeth Hall (Southbank Centre), Philharmonie Luxembourg, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Wiener Konzerthaus, Musikverein in Vienna, Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Konserthuset in Stockholm, and Müpa Budapest, among others.
She is the author of the multi-award-winning operas Je suis narcissiste (2018) and Alexina B. (2023). For the latter, she received the Gold Medal from the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the 2024 Max Award for Best Musical Composition for a Stage Production, and the 2024 Alícia Award in the Authorship category. She is currently working on her new opera, Fire of Fires (Leonardo Grant 2024), alongside various commissions for chamber and symphonic music.
