In the 2016-2017 academic year, the Ferrer Music Foundation started this program in schools located in environments of high vulnerability and at risk of social exclusion<\/b>, to promote music education among primary and secondary students, with teachers from the Liceu Conservatory Foundation<\/b> and a bank of more than 200 instruments<\/b>.<\/p>

We bolster the music education included in the curriculum since we are aware of the benefits for children’s neurodevelopment<\/b> that come with learning to play an instrument. In a program that is growing step by step, we are currently making it possible for students from six state-funded schools<\/b>\u00a0\u2014Escola Bon Pastor, Col\u00b7legi Sant\u00edssima Trinitat, Escola Esperan\u00e7a, Escola Pia Sant Antoni, La Salle Comtal and Escol\u00e0pies Sabadell\u2014 to receive two extra hours of music lessons<\/b> per week in the case of primary students and an extracurricular hour<\/b> in ESO.<\/p>

4,000 students<\/b> have already taken part in this program, which is based on scientific studies in the field of neuroscience that show that learning music promotes cognitive development<\/b>. But we are also fully convinced that giving young people this opportunity brings collateral benefits both emotionally<\/b>, because it increases their confidence and self-esteem, and in terms of social inclusion<\/b>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

With the Primary and Secondary Music program we contribute to creating greater equity from the ground up<\/b>, so that the starting point is fairer for everyone, in line with the Foundation’s ethical commitment to promote social justice<\/b>, in this case, based on quality music education in disadvantaged environments.<\/p>

This support with different kinds of material resources allows students to learn from a very young age and at no additional cost, thanks to the methodology and excellence<\/b> of a prestigious and rigorous institution such as the Liceu Conservatory<\/b>. To make this possible, we assign two teachers from the Conservatory to bolster music education in these centres and, if necessary, to train the school’s teachers.<\/p>

In addition to dedicating more hours to music education<\/b> with expert teachers, the Foundation provides all the students at these schools with string, wind, and percussion instruments<\/b>. The fact that each student has his or her own instrument throughout the school period encourages their motivation and generates a positive link with music<\/b> that, in many cases, is pursued in the future.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The Ferrer Music Foundation also awards scholarships<\/b> so that students who stand out, both for their emerging talent and for their interest and willingness<\/b>, can keep on learning at the Liceu Urquinaona Music School. In addition, those who in the future wish to pursue higher music studies will be eligible for the 20 scholarships that the Foundation awards each year to ensure that more young talents can study the four-year degree without any socio-economic restraints.<\/p>\n

A pioneering project to prevent school failure through mental health<\/h2>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Psychiatrist Miquel Casas is leading a new program for the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders in schools, aiming to improve academic performance and the emotional well-being of children from an early age.<\/p>

Around\u00a020% of students in Catalonia<\/strong>\u00a0present\u00a0neurodevelopmental disorders<\/strong>, such as\u00a0autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, or communication disorders<\/strong>, often associated with\u00a0behavioral difficulties<\/strong>.<\/p>

This proportion is similar to that of other countries in our region, but the difference lies in\u00a0diagnosis and treatment<\/strong>: in Catalonia, only a\u00a0small minority of these children<\/strong>\u00a0receive proper\u00a0detection and care<\/strong>.<\/p>

These disorders are among the main causes of\u00a0low academic performance, school failure, and dropout<\/strong>, which in Catalonia is around 20%, much higher than in countries like the Nordic ones, where it does not exceed 7%.<\/p>

The lack of\u00a0early diagnosis<\/strong>\u00a0means that these difficulties are often identified late, leading to consequences such as\u00a0low academic achievement<\/strong>,\u00a0emotional and behavioral problems<\/strong>\u00a0(anxiety, depression), and a\u00a0negative impact that often extends beyond the school years<\/strong>.<\/p>

According to\u00a0Dr. Miquel Casas, Honorary Professor of Psychiatry at the Autonomous University of Barcelona<\/strong>,\u00a0early detection and intervention<\/strong>\u00a0are key to reversing these trajectories. In this context,\u00a0school-based initiatives for early detection, diagnosis, and treatment<\/strong>\u00a0help\u00a0reduce school failure<\/strong>,\u00a0improve students\u2019 emotional well-being<\/strong>, and\u00a0support families and teachers<\/strong>\u00a0in addressing these challenges.<\/p>
